2、Construction
Fiber optic unit
Core: About 8-10 microns (single mode) or 50/62.5 microns (multi-mode) in diameter, made of high-purity silica, which transmits optical signals.
Cladding: A silicon dioxide layer, approximately 125 microns in diameter, that wraps the fiber core and fully reflects the light signal through refractive index differences.
Coating: An acrylic resin layer (about 250 microns in diameter) that protects the fiber from mechanical damage.
Strength member
Material: Aramid fiber (Kevlar), steel wire or glass fiber reinforced plastic (FRP).
Function: To provide tensile strength to prevent the cable from being damaged by tension under laying or external force.
Water-blocking structure
Filler: petroleum paste (waterproof gel) or water-blocking gauze to prevent water infiltration leading to fiber attenuation or breakage.
Outer sheath
Black high density polyethylene (HDPE) : UV resistant, wear resistant, suitable for direct burial or overhead.
Halogen-free flame retardant materials (LSZH) : used in areas with high fire protection requirements (such as tunnels).
Armor layer (optional)
Steel/aluminum tape armouring: resistant to rodent biting and mechanical impact (direct burial scenarios).Steel wire armouring: enhanced compression resistance, commonly used in submarine cable.
Center reinforcement core
Some fiber optic cables are designed with a non-metal core (FRP) or metal core to further improve tensile performance.
